Fixed vs Floating Seats: Which model fits your library?

When you run a reading room or library, you have to decide how to manage seats. The two common models are fixed and floating. Both can work well depending on your audience, pricing, and occupancy pattern.

The Fixed Seat

A fixed seat is when a student or member pays to reserve one specific chair, like "Seat A1", for a specific shift. They know their exact spot every day.

Fixed seats often work well for long-term members who want certainty. Libraries can usually charge a higher fee because this model offers predictability.

The Floating Seat

A floating seat means a student books a shift, but can sit in any empty chair. This works well when attendance patterns vary and you want more flexibility.

Floating seats can improve occupancy, but they need clear capacity control so you do not overbook and create confusion at the branch.

How to use both

A practical approach is to keep part of your library fixed and part floating. Then review attendance and occupancy reports. If a floating area gets crowded, convert some seats to fixed and adjust pricing.
